Hoyo’s Cousine is a woman-owned business that was established in 1980 by Chef Fathia back in our home country of Somalia where our parents owned a small restaurant. However, due to the Somali civil war, we were forced to flee and start over again in the U.S. and we have since re-opened in 2019.
Hoyo’s Cousine takes pride in bringing the flavors of East Africa to the West Coast. We provide our customers a unique global experience many have never had. Many of our recipes were created with the intention of introducing traditional Somali cooking to people who are unfamiliar with it while both gratifying and evoking nostalgia in those who are. Other meals reflect how numerous cultures and ethnicities have had a profound influence on Somalia throughout its history.
SOMALI HOT SAUCES
In contrast to our neighbors in the region, Somalis enjoy hot sauce (or "Bisbaas" in Somali) on the side, just like pepper and salt. We relish the flavor of the spicy sauce rather than having it cover the entire plate
